I place Hunterâs belongings neatly in the bag and head out of my room. Itâs time to make sure everythingâs ready, and I have to face Mrs. Mason.
Aidenâs already waiting for me. We mightâve had our fair share of crappy moments, but heâs the one person I can count on now that Hunter is gone.
On the drive over to the coroner, my body tenses to the point where it borders on painful. When Aiden parks in front of the funeral home, I sit and stare at the building for a good ten minutes, trying to control the tremor in my usually steady hands. No training in the world can prepare you for having to bury your best friend.
Dragging my ass out of the car, Iâm thankful Aidenâs here and not someone who would try to talk my ear off. He understands that I need silence.
âIâll wait by the car for you. Take your time,â Aiden says.
I nod and then head inside the building. I feel sick as I walk to the room Hunter is in. Closing the door behind me I turn to face Hunterâs casket. There wonât be a viewing during the funeral, and this room is so Mrs. Mason and I can say our goodbyes to Hunter in private.
I place the bag with Hunterâs personal items on the table. My heartbeat speeds up as I move forward, taking slow steps toward Hunter. Folding the flag back, my hands begin to shake as I open the top part of the casket. I look up at the ceiling, not quite ready to see Hunter.
âFuck, one bullet, man! We were supposed to grow old together. How could you leave me?â I whisper hoarsely, because the pain is too intense, suffocating the air from my lungs. It feels as if Iâm being sucked under by the quicksand in my gut.
I drop to one knee and press my forehead against the coffin. My fingers dig into the polished wood, and I wish I could cry so I can find some kind of relief.
âDamn, it hurts missinâ you,â I whisper.
Taking a deep breath, I pull myself up. I lay Hunterâs belongings out, one item at a time. I make sure they are perfectly spread on the table before I brace myself.
The hold on my lungs tightens as I turn to face the casket, and the air comes out in a long hiss.
I take in the pale face of the man I shared my every breath with. His blonde hair is cut in the exact same brush cut style as mine.
Iâll never see his eyes again.
Iâd give anything to see his cocky grin again.
âI fuckinâ love you, Hunter Mason. Shit, I love you more than anythinâ. Iâd give my life to bring you back,â I whisper brokenly. I never told him the words. I always assumed he knew how I felt.
The door behind me opens, and I canât bring myself to turn around.
âCole,â Mrs. Masonâs soft voice ripples over me. Itâs like the ripples on the lake.
